Impeaching The Bible

Who really wrote The Bible?

Most biblical theologians who study this stuff seriously will tell that, in fact, we don’t know who exactly wrote The Bible.

Some will say that it is an authorship that is guided and inspired by God.

There are other gospels that we’re just beginning to hear about that did not make The Bible, like the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Marcion, Gospel of James, Gospel of Peter and the Gospel of Judas. They did not make The Bible? Why did they not make The Bible?! They’re the inspired words of God! You have to ask why they aren’t in The Bible. They will answer you with this:

The committee that decided did not put them in.

Committee? Committee?! What, they voted?! Well, that’s what basically happened.

So, obviously, it is an edited volume.

Examining The Bible is important because the book, in its mindset, is so ingrained in our culture. It’s all about that little list called The Ten CommandmentsWhat’s amazing about the Old and New Testament are the number of moral precepts that stand the test of time, that are not chronologically or culturally limited, that are applicable for all times.

Here’s a big problem with  The Bible as a guide for moral behavior and moral thought. : Which parts you are going to use and which parts you aren’t going to use. In the one passage that conservatives always site in The Bible about a man should not lay with another man and therefore homosexuality is a sin. It is

Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Then they skip to a certain book with a certain passage and it says that we should stone to death disobedient children. It is

Deuteronomy 21:21 – “Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.”

What they do is they pick and choose the passage(s) that we want. That is not consistent and that is not fair.

Now let use The Bible to impeach The Bible. Yes, The Bible. Here we go!

(No context bullshit)

Exodus 21:7 – “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.”

Exodus 35:2 – “For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.” (Are you really going to feel good about enforcing that one?)

Corinthians 11:14 – “Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him”

Leviticus 15:19-24 – “When a woman has a discharge, and the discharge in her body is blood, she shall be in her menstrual impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. And everything on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean. Everything also on which she sits shall be unclean. And whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. And whoever touches anything on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. Whether it is the bed or anything on which she sits, when he touches it he shall be unclean until the evening”

A Christian wrote: “God did not create evil. Evil is simply the state where God is not present.”

If “God did not create evil” then what of the following?

Isaiah 45: 7 – “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things”

Judges 9:23 – “God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem, who acted treacherously against Abimelech.”

1 Samuel 16:14 – “Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him”

Micah 2:3 – “But this is what the Lord says: ‘I will reward your evil with evil; you won’t be able to pull your neck out of the noose. You will no longer walk around proudly, for it will be a terrible time.'”

If you believe that this is your God and your God is infallible, it can’t throw out some of the rules just because you do not like them. Did you know that The Bible has written all over it the fact that it is human edited, socially constructed collection of books put together by people over many centuries?

People are making a mistake of liking their belief in faith and religion to actual, factual tenets. The stories in The Bible are not factual stories that are to be taken as historical events. Taking The Bible literally is to miss its point.

Try to put The Bible on the top of your list of what to read. Stick with it cover to cover, not because it teaches history (Which, in reality, does not) but read it to see for yourself what The Bible is all about. It sure is not great literature. If The Bible would be published as fiction, no review will give it a passing grade. There are some vivid scenes and some quotable phrases but there is no plot, there is no structure, there’s a tremendous amount of filler, and the characters are painfully one-dimensional.

Don’t read The Bible for moral code. It advocates prejudice, cruelty, superstition and murder.

Warning (Or something like that): Reading the whole, Bible will make you an Atheist faster than you think.

  1. i love this…

    Who wrote the bible..

My answer is.. the bible was written by a man born in sin just like the rest of us.

It was written by a wise man who saw and documented events of life per his own best understanding, basing on his own personal relationship with and how he saw God, his own culture and what he stood for and believed to be true. It doesn’t necessarily mean this fellow was right but rather relevant to his time ..

i love the ten commandments , not that i will adopt to all of them, but it is good to have some kind of personal government to guide your selves with.

When we are governed we become somehow kinda self restricted and self aware ,it is very good for human behavior in general . We need laws and that’s how far i go with the bible, simply self discipline . My understanding of god is based on how i see my life , my neighbors and how i choose to relate to him, not what another man wrote and so thinketh..

in general the bible was and stands for an organized religious movement for those that believe in such ( i greatly respect ) , but i do not think it is fair that it is used to define how we should relate to god basing per one mans point of view..

God is very personal and life is very complex and it makes me question how a man can understand such dynamics with clear accuracy ,unless if he did so for a purpose and what he stand for….Christianity…

“haha.. mind my grammar..,English is not my mothers tongue “

      • no… mad respect to you, you come up with challenging topics and i love staff like that and hey you the only man that i know of lately that used the word fuck and god in the same context..

        you are polluted and brave..

    • In some sense there is an anger in this blog — I am in no way a bible thumper – but I do consider myself in touch with my soulful/religious side. Raised catholic – not anymore
First to respond — the Bible is a guide – not a rulebook. There is not a video review of our lives to see what we have done as right or wrong according to a rule book. — The Old Testament is a written testimony of the Jewish people and then perspective of “holy men (who were as sinful as us if not more)” – such as Abraham and David. The New Testament is the reflection of the life of Jesus – so the catholic church controlled these “gospels” and placed the ones that supported them in it and probably destroyed or hid the rest. It also incudes a collection of letters from these same “gospel writers” with some other smaller flavorful fill.

Ok enough of where I think it comes from – now what does it mean — Jesus came and denied the Old Testament – yet we keep it as a reference guide. He claimed only 2 Testaments- not 10 — Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself. The Son of God (if you believe that) or prophet – corrects all the faults of the Old Testament in 2 sentences. Look at the famous 10 commandments – and look at his — his thoughts include those and answer every question you could wnant. So what did Jesus – Confucious – Mohammid – and every other holy man of religion preach – Love – positive energy – treating people positively — (if you are without sin -throw the first stone– none of us can as we are all weak). But what we can do — what is in the power of all of us – is to love each other- – put out positive energy – -have that energy rule the world and our happiness is intact – HEAVEN. When people invade this – infringe on it – the HEAVEN THAT CAN BE OURS – is tainted- or worse destroyed. AN aetheist? No way – I can never look at the beauty of this world – the beauty of the people in it and think that a series of natural selections created this – But what I do believe is that this “Being” is not controlling our lives — only allowing us to live within our own Heaven or Hell – and when we are gone – to have conscious children to remember our lives and keep us alive – while our energy and way of living can effect their heaven

probably too much for this — and not even the tip of the iceberg for where i am — hope all who read can reach out and improve someone else’s life today –
      Jeff
