Who really wrote The Bible?
Most biblical theologians who study this stuff seriously will tell that, in fact, we don’t know who exactly wrote The Bible.
Some will say that it is an authorship that is guided and inspired by God.
There are other gospels that we’re just beginning to hear about that did not make The Bible, like the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Marcion, Gospel of James, Gospel of Peter and the Gospel of Judas. They did not make The Bible? Why did they not make The Bible?! They’re the inspired words of God! You have to ask why they aren’t in The Bible. They will answer you with this:
The committee that decided did not put them in.
Committee? Committee?! What, they voted?! Well, that’s what basically happened.
So, obviously, it is an edited volume.
Examining The Bible is important because the book, in its mindset, is so ingrained in our culture. It’s all about that little list called The Ten Commandments. What’s amazing about the Old and New Testament are the number of moral precepts that stand the test of time, that are not chronologically or culturally limited, that are applicable for all times.
Here’s a big problem with The Bible as a guide for moral behavior and moral thought. : Which parts you are going to use and which parts you aren’t going to use. In the one passage that conservatives always site in The Bible about a man should not lay with another man and therefore homosexuality is a sin. It is
Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
Then they skip to a certain book with a certain passage and it says that we should stone to death disobedient children. It is
Deuteronomy 21:21 – “Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.”
What they do is they pick and choose the passage(s) that we want. That is not consistent and that is not fair.
Now let use The Bible to impeach The Bible. Yes, The Bible. Here we go!
(No context bullshit)
Exodus 21:7 – “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.”
Exodus 35:2 – “For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.” (Are you really going to feel good about enforcing that one?)
Corinthians 11:14 – “Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him”
Leviticus 15:19-24 – “When a woman has a discharge, and the discharge in her body is blood, she shall be in her menstrual impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. And everything on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean. Everything also on which she sits shall be unclean. And whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. And whoever touches anything on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. Whether it is the bed or anything on which she sits, when he touches it he shall be unclean until the evening”
A Christian wrote: “God did not create evil. Evil is simply the state where God is not present.”
If “God did not create evil” then what of the following?
Isaiah 45: 7 – “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things”
Judges 9:23 – “God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the citizens of Shechem, who acted treacherously against Abimelech.”
1 Samuel 16:14 – “Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him”
Micah 2:3 – “But this is what the Lord says: ‘I will reward your evil with evil; you won’t be able to pull your neck out of the noose. You will no longer walk around proudly, for it will be a terrible time.'”
If you believe that this is your God and your God is infallible, it can’t throw out some of the rules just because you do not like them. Did you know that The Bible has written all over it the fact that it is human edited, socially constructed collection of books put together by people over many centuries?
People are making a mistake of liking their belief in faith and religion to actual, factual tenets. The stories in The Bible are not factual stories that are to be taken as historical events. Taking The Bible literally is to miss its point.
Try to put The Bible on the top of your list of what to read. Stick with it cover to cover, not because it teaches history (Which, in reality, does not) but read it to see for yourself what The Bible is all about. It sure is not great literature. If The Bible would be published as fiction, no review will give it a passing grade. There are some vivid scenes and some quotable phrases but there is no plot, there is no structure, there’s a tremendous amount of filler, and the characters are painfully one-dimensional.
Don’t read The Bible for moral code. It advocates prejudice, cruelty, superstition and murder.
Warning (Or something like that): Reading the whole, Bible will make you an Atheist faster than you think.
